Can u unlock 5.12 but with 3.12 firmware?

Nope, you cannot unlock 05.12.01 period.
The firmware has nothing to do with the baseband. You can downgrade the firmware but very very slim chances to downgrade the baseband on an iphone 3G. Try running fuzzyband thru cydia to see if you have the old iboot on your 3G model.

That's only if he has a 3G, which he didn't mention having. Anyway, OP, you either have an old 3G or you can't unlock.
