can unauthorized cables mess up iPhone 5

Hello, my original charger got messed up and I ordered a new one. In between the time it came I was using unofficial cables to charge my phone, i went through two that worked for couple days each then stopped, the third one I got the message that said "accessory may not work correctly" or something of that sort then finally it stopped too after two days. I got so fed up I stopped using the phone, the original cable came but it is not charging and the battery is completely drained.
Im too angry wanting to toss this phone now after spending so much money and not knowing what to do now. I am really sad

How long have you left it plugged in before you decided it wasn't charging? I have found that my 5s charges faster when I use the Apple A/C adapter instead of a USB port on my computer, you might want to try that if you haven't. If waiting and using the A/C adapter doesn't work, I'd suggest a trip to the Apple store. You may still have warranty depending on when you bought it.
