Can visiting a link give your phone a virus, harm it, etc?

I followed a goo.gl URL, to a Google Docs file was unavailable, that I don't know what it is.

General question though, can visiting any link on an iPhone give you a virus, or somehow make you vulnerable to having info stolen, or give someone the ability to do things with your phone?
