I've been in the market for a first-gen iPhone in order to unlock/jailbreak so I can use it on T-Mobile USA and not have to use AT&T. My problem is that all of the online guides I've found are not only confusing, but they always reference old software.

For example, in terms of getting to use T-Mobile USA and take advantage of the $5.99 T-Zone plan (versus the $19.99 "unlimited" plan), the guides online date to 2007 with 1.x.x iPhone system software.

I would like to see guides that show how to do this but with up-to-date software such as the iPhone 2.1 Firmware and iTunes 8 (not to mention up-to-date versions of Pwnage, Quickpwn, and other tools). This could prevent several new users from bricking their expensive phones. And considering used 1st Gen iPhones are going for $500 - in some cases - on eBay, yes, it is expensive. It is certainly a bigger gamble than bricking a Sony PSP (less than $200) when trying to use Dark Alex's custom firmware.

Thanks!
