If the apps run directly on the watch in OS2 as Apple claims, surely we should be able to install apps straight onto the watch without needing to take up space on our phones? I would use a lot more apps if this is the case.

You watch has very limited memory and I believe the bulk of the apps will still be on the phone.
 
I assume that the App will need an update in order to be native to the watch. So until OS2 is released to everyone, nothing will change.
 
No, applications for  Watch are still technically extensions to normal apps, but in this case the processing has just moved from iPhone to Watch; they are very similar to the OS 1 counterparts (so much so that Apple pretty much removed all mention of that style of app processing from the new Xcode).
