Okay I'm late to the game and old school when it comes to music.

I have a bunch of MP3 files ripped my CDs. Can these be transferred to my AW without the need to authorize a computer or match with iTunes?

Please tell me this is possible and I don't have to tied to a subscription with Apple.

I have a bunch of ripped music in iTunes/Music on my phone and in the watch app on the phone everything shows up to “add”, so, while I personally don’t have the need to do that, I don’t see any issue. And I do not have an Apple Music subscription.

So I tried to create a playlist and drop MP3 into it. The playlist created has a cloud with a line through it saying it can’t be added to my iCloud Music Library.

It says “this playlist can’t be uploaded because it includes other media kinds or songs that are not eligible.”

Another playlist I was able to add had grayed out songs. Some prompt asking me to verify the computer to match with iTunes.

Everything seems to be cloud based.

I should be able to just drag and drop MP3 files on my Mac into Apple Music folder and sync with my watch.

almost all of my ripped music are .m4a files on my Mac, since I copied them from the Mac to the iPhone years ago, I assume they're .m4a on the iPhone too, and show as "transferrable" to the watch.
I do not recall whether I ripped mp3 or m4a, way too long ago ...
