Does anybody know if it's possible to boot from these 3rd party Expresscard SD adaptors that operate as a USB device?

after reading your question and it appears the answer is "Yes."

Can I install Mac OS X on an SD storage device and use it as a startup volume?

Yes. Change the default partition table to GUID using Disk Utility, and format the card to use the Mac OS Extended file format to do so.

It was interesting to learn you can load Windows XP and Vista on one using Bootcamp and run that OS off of one as well.

Yeah I'm pleased to say that it looks like you can boot from the Sandisk Expresscard adapter. I restored my DiskWarrior DVD image to my SanDisk Extreme III SDHC 4GB card and it booted fine and it was significantly faster booting than my DVD. If only I could easily put both DiskWarrior and DiskUtility on my SD I'd be happy. But I think you need a 16 GB drive in order to restore your OSX image onto. I guess that will be SL when it's released.

So now the only delimna I have is whether I use
