It's talked about every year but I'll say it again...the phone companies in America really like to screw us. Verizon will not offer me any discount on a new iPhone 5S since I am only one year into my contract. That's fine, I get it. But what doesn't make sense is that it's cheaper for me to cancel my Verizon contract, pay the ETF of $240, and buy the phone from another provider at $200 than it would be to buy the phone at full price for $649 from Verizon. In short, it's cheaper for me to leave Verizon. And what's even more annoying is that they don't care because the cell companies in the US are all in bed together and know there is no real competition.
I'm not whining that Verizon won't offer me a discount. I fully expect that and understand that. What I think is absurd is that they make it cheaper for customers to leave. I think I'd be happier knowing my ETF was $500 and therefore made sense for me to stay with Verizon.
