Im new to mac is a dmg file just like exe or whatever and can i delete it after i install the program? bc sometimes when i try to empty the trash it doesnt let me delete the file bc it is in use...

Also why do some things say eject instead of trash? can i delete those items too after ejecting them...thanks

You can delete the DMG after you properly installed the application you wanted to install. In order to delete the DMG, you have to eject it first.

Installing Applications in Mac OS X

To learn more about OS X and how you can find answers for yourself:

Btw, an .exe file is an executable file, thus it can be an application, an installer or even a compressed archive (but for Windows). A DMG is a disk image, like a CD or DVD or USB flash memory thumb drive connected to the computer.

A DMG is like a ZIP file, but it mounts a virtual drive on your desktop for installation. You must 'eject' (or unmount) the virtual drive, then you can delete the DMG file from your computer. If the DMG has a virtual drive mounted, then you cannot delete it because it is still open.
