Not that I know of, but I came up with a workaround. On my MacBook I wanted the dock on the side only to maximize the meager screen height. I created a hierarchical group of folders into which I put aliases to my applications, all grouped by task. I then put the top folder into the dock set to display as stack and view contents as list. This gives a compact and fast way to locate applications and let me remove most of the apps from the dock. Ironically it's a lot like the Start button in old versions of windows! In any case I'm very happy with my zero-cost solution.
