Is it possible to have an external monitor connected and have it on a shelf above the mbp and use that as the main monitor? So that when I wanted to move something to the mbp screen I can drag it down rather than dragging right or left to move it to the mbp screen? Hope this makes sense?

Sure you can! It’s just a matter of dragging the monitor to the desired orientation in System Preferences, and then dragging the white menu bar to the desired primary screen.
