I doubt I can afford one, but I am interested in smart door locks for my front door, but I think being in the UK it may be harder as the way my door works is different to any smart lock I’ve seen. (Not that all UK doors work like mine).

My door works like this:

- Door handle pulls down to open the door like a normal door.
- However, if you pull it up beyond its resting horizontal position, then five metal poles/hooks come out at various points to very securely hold the door in place.
- Pushing the handle down again retracts these so it opens.
- A yale style key is used purely to lock the handle itself so that it can’t be pulled down. Locking it does NOT make any additional hook or bolt go into the door frame, it simply stops the handle going down so the current bolts cannot be retracted.

To lock the door with the key, you MUST be holding the handle up at the same time as turning the key. This is the biggest issue I have for a smart lock I think.

Anyone had any experience of a smart lock for a door like this? Or even know the name of the type of locking mechanism to make my search easier?

Thanks.

Unfortunately there is no solution to just add to the door. You would have to have a new locking mechanism fitted in the door.

I had a similar situation and had to do just that to go with my NUKI smart lock.
