My wrist is roughly 170mm, or just under 6.7 inches. Here's a pic with the 38mm on top and the 42mm on bottom.

I'm suddenly having second thoughts about the size. Maybe I'm overthinking things.

Your call, they both look ok on your wrist. With that said there are advantages of the 42mm model (bigger screen and bigger battery)

Having had both the 38 was just a little too small to navigate and to read.

IMO the 42 looks fine.
One thing you may find with the 42 is you'll be right in between the S/M band being too small and the M/L being too big.
Go with the 42

38mm.

My wrist is right around 7" and I use the S/M size of the Sport band on my 42mm, usually at the third hole from the end (second hole when sleeping or in hot weather, fourth hole when working out).

Given another chance, I'd probably go 38mm. My wife thought the 42 was good on me, though.

Depends on your eyesight. If you have good eyesight, 38 is fine, but if you have aging eyes, you might want to go with 42 for easier reading of text.

Purely for looks the 38 looks better.

I use both. I have a 38mm for running and a 42mm for the office. I like the 38mm because it's lighter when I'm out on a run. I also think the 38 looks better on my 165mm wrist. I only bought the 42mm because I thought the touch targets would be easier to hit. They aren't. If feels about the same to me. But the battery is longer.

Although I have thin wrists my large-ish hands look absolutely stupid next to a tiny watch. Go with 42.

To my eye, the 38mm looks a tad small but the 42mm is a tad big (don't shoot me, just my opinion). So I don't think either is an obvious choice over the other. In that case, I would personally go with the 42mm.
