it's driving me nuts, cnn, engaged and all blog sites cause safari to use that hideous font.

it's been like this for a few years and I'm considering removing all my fonts except the factory fonts from my machine.

Times New Roman. Definitely. Without a doubt. :D

at this point, i don't know if you're being serious, i've gone through 1,800 fonts trying to figure out which one resembles a special version of a popular font.

----------

how can i remove all fonts except system fonts?

That's a good call.

Remove everything but the needed system fonts and then add the ones back that you want. Font management software would allow easy enabling/disabling of fonts if you want.

Do you know what the minimum system fonts for your OS version are?

Just to give everyone who has this problem a somewhat viable solution->

I ended up disabling ALL my fonts in Font Book except the system fonts. I might have been a bit more investigative if I was still doing design work but I'm not.. Best of all, I didn't go to extremes and delete all my non-native osx fonts from my library either.

That looks like it's the lovechild of Papyrus and Comic Sans... I'm guessing the font foundry who created this then hung them selves after, because it's horrid.

Better question, does it only happen in Safari? Someones probably playing a practical joke on you using a custom loaded CSS file.
Safari->Preferences->Advanced->StyleSheet

Or by renaming a font, which would seem less likely. Since CNN uses Arail, Helvetica, sans-serif; font stack. And engadget uses Georgia, serif;
