So right now I have an iPhone 4 and won't be eligible to upgrade until November. My mother has no smartphone currently, but we've ordered an iPhone 4S and then we're going to combine and get on a family plan.

Question: When the 4S arrives, can I just swap the sim cards, and put my sim into the new 4S and give my mother my current iPhone 4? Will this somehow "re-up" MY contract at all, or will I retain my current November upgrade date and same contract end date?

She doesn't care about having my "old" 4 by the way :)

Call AT&T before you put in your old SIM and activate the new iPhone. Tell the rep that you are doing a "cross upgrade" to make sure that your mom's line doesn't get a data plan added to it.
I went into an AT&T store on Friday to verify this because I'm in the same situation and this is what the sales rep and manager told me to do. Good luck!
