I am returning my 4s to apple.com. All I want to do is exchange it for another color, but that's another story.
Can I keep the sim card for when I buy the new color?

Sure you want to keep an inactivated Micro-SIM. Why do you want to keep a dead Micro-SIM?

When you do this simple exchange it will require a return transaction of your iPhone and a new purchase so your current Micro-SIM is going to be deactivated in the process. Was this an upgrade or a new line and was a phone number port involved, all these things can make your "simple" color swap much more complex.
