The solution above is only for iMessages. If she is in a group message, she can go to the message, click details in the top right, and then turn on Do Not Disturb. That will turn off alerts for that group message.

Yeah the problem is that some are iMessages others aren't and they end up breaking up into many subgroups so even when she does DND. It doesn't always work well.
There was a recent Collegehumor or buzzfeed video about this effect. The one guy without an iPhone doesn't get invited to lunch because iMessage splits his "green" responses from the blue.
