iOS Can you make add-ons to existing apps?

I have an idea for app for the app store but I was wondering cause you make a sort of add-on to a core existing app? (ie mail, etc)

Probably not. There are ways to communicate with other apps (like accessing Address Book data or browsing the photo gallery), but you might have special needs that aren't fulfilled by the SDK.
