Everywhere it says that Yosemite is required, I don't get this? Why do I have "AirDrop" in the sidebar of my Mac running Mavericks then?

I'd like to send stuff from my Mac (Mac Pro 2011) to my iPad Air (2013, iOS 8). Why is that not possible? It doesn't seem to work. :(

Thanks all.

Thanks, I understand now. Will my Macs hardware still be compatible? I'll be upgrading to Yosemite in not too long.

If your Mac can Airdrop now, it should be fine under Yosemite to Airdrop to iOS. I was just doing that yesterday. My wife has a new refurbed rMBP and wanted some family pics for wallpapers. I had some on my Air and AirDroped them right over.
