Basically, could I buy, for example, a mouse from store.apple.com with the $100 gift card?

Anything in the iTunes or App stores, but nothing in the Apple Store, as the OP is asking.

not in my experience, I had an Itunes gift card and bought something off the shelf at the local apple store.

Sorry, I'm not buying that lol

well then you're free to use yours only on apps and Itunes. I'm just trying to help the OP here. Like I said, this assumes the education gift card is an Itunes card and not some app only card.

"iTunes Gift Cards and Certificates can be redeemed for songs, albums, audiobooks, videos, and games on the iTunes Store. They cannot be used to buy Apple products. To purchase items outside of the iTunes Store, visit the Apple Gift Cards section of online Help."

My point is that an iTunes card can't be used in the apple store. You need an apple store giftcard...hence I don't buy your cliam

And I who wanted to buy a thule messenger bag for my card... Guess I should try and sell it for $80 or something then.

Would be a better plan to buy from Best Buy and get one of their gift cards, which you can then use to buy an Amazon or Apple store gift card instead if you don't want to use it on iTunes or the App Store (which most people don't).

What if you try buying stuff from an Apple store using the Apple Store iphone app? It lets you check out yourself and charged your iTunes account. If you have a gift card balance, maybe it will deduct it from that first?

when you redeem your itunes card it goes into your account balance, which like I stated would work on anything. The catch is that it has to be through the app.
