Currently I don’t have a backup for my MacPro 5,1 because I think Time Capsule stopped being a reliable way to use Time Machine. One day it wasn’t operating correctly. I don’t know if it was because of the Time Machine app or because of Time Capsule, but I go into the Airport Utility app and disk inside TC isn’t even named as the one I erased and reformatted. It was working and backing up for awhile so I assumed Disk Utility reformatted it correctly. I had to reformat because when I upgraded from Sierra to High Sierra, it somehow “broke” Time Machine to Time Capsule. The backups were no longer encrypted so I decided to start over reformat Time Capsule and renamed the disk. And like I said it was backing up correctly for a while, then suddenly it wasn’t working. Using Airport Utility the Time Capsule disk wasn’t named with the new name I gave it after reformatting, but the previous name!
Anyway, I don’t know what app or device to blame, or maybe I did something wrong. I’m thinking using Time Machine again to backup my data until the new M1 iMac comes out. I also have Carbon Copy Cloner. What external HDD do you recommend that I buy? The external needs a USB-A or FireWire 800 connector, and ideally the external would have Thunderbolt 3 that I would use for my future iMac. I have about 3 TB of data.
What do you think of LaCie’s d2 Professional 6 TB HDD for $225? It’s USB-C, no Thunderbolt 3. Perhaps Thunderbolt 3 is not that important as most of my data are not videos for editing??
