Can you restore from an older iPhones backup?

Realy sorry if this has been posted before, but I checked the FAQs and did a search and found squat, so here goes.

I currently have the origional iPhone (edge 16GB) and I have an iPhone 4 on order with three uk. Can I use one of my edge restore files to put all my apps and settings and saves over to the iPhone 4. Because losing 2-3 years of saves would kinda suck.

I believe you can.
But you would be better off starting fresh and setup as new so you dont get any bugs carried over from previous backups to your new iphone 4.
