Try Mac the Ripper for ripping. Handbrake is more of an encoding tool than a pure ripping application. It certainly is not the best Mac DVD ripper available.

Which is not the best DVD ripper available? Handbrake, Toast, or MacTheRipper?

And the real thing comes down to whether the OP wants to RIP, or COPY. MacTheRipper is great for COPY, Handbrake is great for RIP.

Wrong. Mac the Ripper is great for ripping (hence the name Mac the Ripper), Handbrake is good for encoding ripped DVDs, it is poor at ripping. Mac the Ripper can rip DVDs that Handbrake has a problem with. Toast is good for burning ripped DVDs to err.. DVDs or making disc images.

I was under the impression that the act of ripping also encoded it. I guess I got that wrong... besides, it isn't totally unheard of for a program to be called something that leads you to believe it does something other than it does. Safari, for example, doesn't necessarily give you the idea that it is a web browser, instead, it could be a simple little included game.

It is a cute name though if you're on in on the joke. :)

First came the Navigators, then the Explorers, and then the Conquerors. And finally, we come to go on Safaris.
