Can you run a 1440p monitor on a 2009 MacBook Pro?

Hi, everyone,

I'm trying to help a friend connect their 13" 2009 MacBook Pro to their external 1440p monitor but I'm not sure which cables to recommend. The monitor has a spare HDMI (but no DVI) so that's what we're looking to use. It also has a DisplayPort but if possible the HDMI will be the one that's used.

Is it possible to get a mini DisplayPort > HDMI adapter/cable that'll run a monitor at 1440p or are they stuck at 1080p maximum due to the spec of the mini DisplayPort?

2560 X 1600 is the max external screen it'll support, this should be fine over a mini display port to HDMI cable.

However if I remember rightly you won't get any audio over that unless you have a 2010 model.

Whether it will work over HDMI depends on the monitor.

The computer is perfectly capable of it.

Thanks. Any chance you can recommend which adapter I could suggest? Each Mini DisplayPort > HDMI adapter I look for on Amazon (Germany) states a maximum of 1080p.

- You're right. Amazon.de is a mess in this case. There's this rather expensive one which will go up to 4K resolutions.
To be honest, you're better off going with a pure DisplayPort cable.
