So that when you make a new event it will automatically set up an alert or two to remind you (as you choose, in settings, before hand).

Really makes the appointment making process more frustrating and time consuming, especially when I always set it to 1 Day Before and 1 Hour Before.
 
In Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars scroll down to the calendars section and you will see Default Alert Time. When you go in there you can set the default alert time for Birthdays, Events and All Day Events (for example 1 hour before, 12 hours before, etc.)

Each type has it's own options and you can choose none. Also, this is in iOS 5 so if you are on 4 or below I do not have a phone to check with.
