Can you set up Time Machine on a network drive?

Basically what I wanna know is:

Can I configure time machine to back up to a hard disk that is connected to my router? I guess essentially I'm trying to make a homemade time capsule. Is this possible and if so, how?

I got that setup working on my AEBS but it required a bit of patience. The key for me was mounting the volume in the Finder sidebar after I had done the initial setup in Time Machine. Then Time Machine sees the volume and will properly complete the first and future backups.
