is the raid0 working on the chip board or in the 2 hard drives as a software raid?
what if I remove 1 hard drive only?
and if I put 1 optical drive only?

Specify which LaCie device you have?

The vast majority of LaCie enclosures do not have 5.25 bays OR externally accessible bays, so optical drives are a non-starter in virtually any of them.

Will void the warranty, certainly. Taking out one drive of a RAID 0 pair will destroy all of the data.

at this point, warranty and data lost is no concern, as the drive is new.

nothing will be done out of the box, I have opened it.

I have the 300965U, 800GB = 400GB x 2 Maxtor DimandMax 11

Again, My questions are about the Raid tech, is it hardware or software?
if it's the chip board, will an optical drive work on this raid0 chip board?

You're not quite getting the concept here. This drive physically cannot take a 5.25" optical drive in it. There are two 3.5" drive bays internally , and a hardware interface card that does hardware RAID. You can't have one drive plus an optical drive. Plus where is the opening for the optical drive tray?? I would be astounded if the board in this box supported an optical drive even if you could attach it.

Just buy an external optical drive...

Let me start over

I have
d2 DVD-RW on firewire400
d2 800GB on USB2.0

I don't use the DVD-RW that often, and if I did, I had time to wait.
not the same with the 800GB, I need a faster transfer rate that FW400 will offer me if I swap chip board set.

Physical or non Physical are not my worries. as I can let it run bare bone or do my own box.

Y? because I know that LaCie chips are better processors than the cheap no-name chinese boxes sold on eBay.

My question was not on optical and 1 HDD, if you paid attention, I mentioned 1 only, not both.

Either just 1 HDD or 1 Optical at the time.
Since I would like to

have Fw400 with 1 400GB HDD
USB2.0 with 1 DVD-RW
and the other 400GB HDD will be install inside the computer.

Now, if the chip board is the Raid0, what happens if I use 1 HDD on a Raid0 board or a Optical Drive for that matter
