I have an Anker 5-port IQ+ USB-A charger which will put out up to 18 Watts with QC 3.0 (Qualcomm). I think that it normally does 12 Watts max outside of QC 2.0. I would prefer to bring this on trips for charging my 2021 MacBook Pro using USB-C rather than bringing the included 140 Watt charging brick as it can also charge my phone and headset. These USB-A chargers put out much less power but they would be fine for overnight charging the MacBook Pro. Other alternatives would be to find a smaller and lighter USB-C charger and then to charge my iPhone and Beats Fit Pro off the MacBook Pro.

Does the overall idea of charging the MacBook Pro with a USB-A charger work?

What do you use as a traveling solution with your MacBook Pro (I assume that this also applies to the 2016-2020 MacBook Pros and the MacBook Air).?

No. Charger must be USB-C and adapt the USB-PD protocol. I mean, go right ahead and plug your minimum $2,500 computer into a non-compliant charger. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, that's why I asked. I'm sure that there are a lot of people migrating from Retina MacBook Pros with similar questions.

Yes it will work just fine. The MacBook pro is PD compliant. Which means that it can charge with USB A to C cables too. It'll not use quick charge so it'll be maxed at 12w. So slow charging. (At first when plugging it in. It might say not charging since it's so slow. But it'll charge if you let it)

M1 MBA here. Its fine. Safeguards are designed into the system. My every night charging method is with an Anker multi-port usb A charger. No issues, no rude messages.
