I’m specifically referring to the new feature (the one with the green screen) that shows you how many feet/inches you are from the lost item. Does this work with two U1-chipped iPhones or is this new feature limited to just AirTag?

It’s limited to just iPhone-to-AirTags detection… for now. Although I believe they technically could allow this for any U1 enabled device if they wanted.

I’d love to be able to find my iPhone or AirTags from my Apple Watch too, which currently has a dormant U1 chip inside it.

OMG yes, that would be a dream come true of mine.

Since the launch of the Apple Watch, one of my biggest gripes with it is that Apple vehemently refuses to incorporate a native feature to alert you when your watch has disengaged from your iPhone. Currently, all it does is turn on that red phone symbol at the top of the watch's display and nothing more. If only that symbol would come accompanied with a haptic alert, it would alert the user the instant the watch and phone become separated.

If they would finally give us that alert and then open up the possibility of using the watch to track down a lost phone, that would be amazing. I once lost my iPhone X inside a Vegas casino and it was the worst 90 minutes walking all over the place trying to find it. I had to use my friend's iPhone and sign into her Find My iPhone app, so that's how we knew my phone was still inside the casino. If something like a U1 chip would've existed back then, it would've made things so much easier.

AirTag should also be able to trigger a notification on your iPhone/Watch once an item loses connection with your iPhone. So, if you leave your bag/keys/etc somewhere, your phone should let you know right away that you're walking away from that item.
