Can you use iPhone 4 4.0.1 back up to restore new 4S

I backed up my iPhone 4 running 4.x before I sold it thinking I could restore from backup when I got the 4S. Has anyone who has their 4S tried this? I have read some posts saying this is not a good idea but it's the only back up I have.
