Can you use the first gen iPhone on a pay as you go plan?

A good friend of mine came back from Japan after being there for 3 years. He's back in the US, but is thinking he may go back to Japan and not stay here long. He doesn't want to sign up for a 2 year agreement, and buy another phone, I was going to lend him my first gen iPhone till he figured out what he is gonna do. Is it possible to get a pay as you go plan for the first get iPhone?

yes* as long as the carrier is compatible with the 2g phone.
AND he doesn't mind NOT having a data plan, IFAIK there is no PAYG data plans.
