Can You Watch Own Media or just AppleTV

So most of the reviews I've read say that the AVP is great for watching movies and TV shows...

But can you watch your own movies, eg. Movies you've made digital from your DVDs which are in AppleTV.
I know on the AppleTV you access them through "My Computer"

There's nothing about AVP and where the content comes from, I'm hoping its not just official AppleTV content.
