Someone I met while waiting in line for my iPhone (which was still 2 hours, nearly a week later!) called AT&T who told her that California law says they can't demand the phone be returned. Does anyone know if this is true?

Also, if I cancel my contract with AT&T is there any way to keep my number? They were my provider before and I want to keep my number, I just don't want to be locked into a contract.

Realistically, they can't demand the phone be returned no matter where you are. They haven't the resources to come to your home, nor pursue every such case in court. All they will do is charge you for the phone in addition to the ETF.

Yeah I don't see them letting anyone use them for a subsidized phone. You'll end up paying for it outside of of the original ETF, probably in the form of a bill.
