I'm curious about how many people decide that they would downgrade their iPad Pro order due to the lack of luster of IOS 15. I figured that I do not need the storage or RAM to just have the same iPad as my 2018 trade in so I downgraded from an 11 inch 1TB w/16GB of RAM to an 11 inch 256GB 8GB of RAM.

So you needed it before, and now you don’t? Do the apps you envisaged working with suddenly not work? Or you assumed all that power would only be useful for the os? Or you bought it on the off chance that X feature or whatever you envisaged in your own head would be released? What a weird way to live.

I'm definitely considering it. Thinking of dropping from 12.9 1TB to 256 model. I think a lot of people are reconsidering now there doesn't seem to be a viable reason right now to get the higher end model. Plus this video seems to sum up there is no advantage to the 16GB RAM at this point even when multitasking. Maybe it will change, but by that time a newer iPad Pro will probably come out.

When you buy a mac (for example) don’t you pick the config for what you need for your apps? Why is it different here?

This situation to me is like back in the day when HTC made popular phones and came out with a 3D phone but there was not much content to support it. Yes it still ran all the apps but you were expecting more. The M1 chip had people excited for more.

In general yes, you buy what fits your needs. The issue here is that Apple explicitly advertised the RAM differences which they never do. This is unlike them. Even though you never want to buy hardware on the premise of some future update that may never happen, it seemed like Apple was heading somewhere with this. Also why even offer 16GB on a tablet? iPADs have always been optimized with lower end RAM configurations from 4-6. I don't think anyone wants to pay hundreds of dollars more for 16 so they can open more safari tabs without a reload. So there had to be something to this right? 8 GB will be future-proof for quite some time.

Unfortunately they also included the increased RAM only in the more expensive upper tier models thus further confusing customers. So why put all this power or have two tiers of RAM configurations unless Apple had something coming to justify the purchase. Why not just have 8 across the entire line unless there would be an Apple reason for 16.

There was speculation that Apple would introduce "Pro" applicatons (Xcode, Final Cut) or some other reason for such a giant leap in RAM specs with an M1 chip. What made logical sense is that WWDC would answer this with some significant updates.

In the end, everyone was disappointed with the iPAD updates at WWDC as it introduced nothing of substance and question what is the point of a higher tier iPad Pro model that I purchased when it does nothing better than a cheaper model so thus people are returning them and scaling down as the current one offers no advantage now and by the looks of it, in the future.

I’ve always wanted 1TB so not downgrading. Just means I’m not upgrading to 2TB.

Also, I haven’t had an unwanted app or tab reload yet on my 16GB so I’m quite happy albeit I don’t use super memory hungry apps. I do believe Safari’s using ~3-4GB though. I once accidentally force closed Safari and it freed up like 3.7GB RAM.

I'm keeping my 1TB 2021 model, absolutely no reason to return it. But I didn't buy it for the RAM, I buy it for the storage as I keep a ton of things locally on it and 512GB isn't enough.

If you bought the 1TB model for the RAM but are now returning it for a lesser option, you didn't need the RAM in the first place and are one of the reasons Apple marketed the 16GB in the first place. They want people who think the need RAM to buy the more expensive iPad.

Hint: No one needs 16GB of RAM on their iPad.

It may not be strictly needed. Nonetheless, I find it makes using the iPad less annoying.

I much prefer this 1TB/16GB config for $1799/1999 than I would’ve a 1TB/8GB config for $1599/1799. Granted, 8GB is still a quite helpful upgrade from the 4GB on most 2015-18 iPP models.

Why do you prefer it? There isn't a difference in performance in the 8GB model and the 16GB model.

I don't have the 8GB so no idea how much that reduces reloads. As I mentioned though, I haven't had reloads on 16GB. Considering the memory usage stats, I'm not confident 8GB will be able to deliver the same experience.

Plus, since I'm using it for 3-5 years, there's more headroom when iPadOS gets more bloated as was the case with iOS 7, 8, 9, 11 and 13. iPadOS 13 really sucked at memory management on 2GB RAM devices compared to iOS 12 and took its toll even on 4GB.

Your iPad, like a Mac, is going to use the memory that it has available. You aren't getting a benefit from 16GB of memory that is allowing your iPad to perform better than an 8GB model.

Unlike a Mac, the iPad can't use swap. If the iPad runs out of memory, then it will eject apps and tabs from memory causing reloads. Chances are it'll run out of memory sooner on 8GB than on 16GB.

Whether 8GB will be good enough is a moot point since I want 1TB storage. I got a 2018 12.9 1TB refurb when Mini-LED was giving me headaches and I know I still get reloads on that (A12X/6GB).

And really, even on Windows, I need to have 4GB pagefile with 8GB RAM else Firefox would quit while with 16GB RAM, I can set a minimal 1GB pagefile and it still works fine. For my usage, that means 8GB without swap is not enough (at least on Windows). I don't think 8GB would be enough on MacOS either if swap was didabled since I always had 2-4GB swap used.

Many people fell for the hype.

8GB is good enough but it doesn't really matter if you are happy with it.

I'm keeping my maxed out M1 12.9, there's no reason for me to return it and I didn't upgrade because of what may come out of WWDC. I love my iPad Pro, it's my one device, do it all 99% of the time!

Perhaps we will never know what the story was fully. But I expect there will be a lot of refurbs for the 16GB variety popping up soon.

I'll be honest. I wasn't expecting macOS on the new iPad, but I also was expecting some better features.
I'm not returning it though. I reached out to Feral Interactive about future upgrades to GRID for maxed visuals and 60-120fps options and they are exploring that avenue. If developers are able to take advantage of the hardware, then I'm at an ok spot.

Apple SERIOUSLY messed up. Why....WHY the heck have 16GB of RAM on the iPad when they did not announce iPad OS 15 would take advantage of that RAM?

Nope, no. Nada, not even thinking of it.. I am perfectly happy with my purchase. Yes I had a halo blooming glitch, but it’s been so much better since factory reset. I don’t care about the iPadOS update, lacklustre but my ipad still does everything I want. I went for the size of screen and storage that I wanted, and that was perfect. This will last me 5-10 years now :)

10 years might be overly optimistic. :p
