Cancleing data

I know you cant cancle the data plan but can you say the iphone broke and that you dont have it any more and you dont wanna pay the data for the phone, then unlock it and use it with a regular sim? Or is there still a canclation fee?

Also the iphones going to be on a family plan and my iphone will be the only one.

shouldnt be a cancellation fee for data. only if you cancel the contract...
