Candybar and Dock Library problems

I'm not sure if this is a problem with the software themselves, or what. But I've been trying to change the color/theme of my dock first with Candybar, then with Dock Library. It wasn't working, so thought I'd look into the dock setting under System Preferences. When I changed the dock position to the bottom, that's when the new theme took effect, but it doesn't work when docked on the sides, which is where I want it. Is there any way around this?? I have Snow Leopard.
