I have a 2 year old Canon Powershot S30. Three megapixels. An excellent camera that has held up well and taken a lot of great pictures. I paid $400 for it in April of 03. I hate to ask, but what's a 3.2 megapixel going for these days?

WELL

well I paid 299 Only because i bought lots of accesories but base 3.2 mega pixel is 199 at best buy but only came with 16 mb meory (i'm not joking) some instructions and some sofware But i bought a case and a 256mb memory so if your not like me and dont care about specs about $210 at best buy. ;)

Hi, I bought a Canon A75 (3.2 mega pixels) about a year ago and I think it was $199 after rebate. It takes great pics. and it's easy to use. If I think about it, it came with a 32 mb memory but the one just before that came with (lol) 8 mb card  really now not much can be taken on 8 or 16 so I bought a 256 myself. Enjoy your new camera.

sure. if you're taking night-shots (e.g city-scapes) with longer exposures the stability the tripod allows for dramatically crisper images.

additionally (and no less importantly) it really gets you thinking about shot composition.

hey, it all depends what you want to use your camera for. if you enjoy taking photos a tripod will probably make it a good deal more fun. there are better people to ask about this on MR. there's an army of 'digital rebels' out there generally lurking in the photo-related sub-forums.

As you can see in my sig, I have the canon powershot s230. It's the digital elph kind. This thing is about 2+ years old now and I still get people amazed by how small it is. My next camera, maybe in the next few years will have a better optical zoom, mine only has a 2x, image stabilization would be great as well.

Yes you do

Check ou the nikon Coolpix 8800: I have seen it for less than 500 bucks
It will just blow any little canon away....

Otherwise the Lumix with Leica lens is also a good buy but the warranty sucks

Canon??? Do they still make cameras??? You get way better quality lenses with Nikon; Not even a question

now you're just being silly.
Yeah, but at least we got a few posts down before someone brought up the fanboy s**t.

On topic, had a Canon S400 since early last year. Aside from a bit of fish-eye from the ludicrously small lens, it's great. It's weathered countless gigs, festivals and a couple of butterfingered friends too.

Fanboy? On a Mac forum?

I have been taking pictures for over 30 years with Nikon cameras, FYI

I made a precise statements. You get better quality with Nikkor lenses than with Canon's albeit Canon does make nice bodies. All the reviews I have read admit so. Just take a look at DPR The entire NikonCafe will back me on this one ;)

Who'd have thought, huh.

Every single topic in which a Canon, or a Nikon is mentioned, it turns into a slanging match. Reasonable, if the original topic is along the lines of "Why my Nikon is better than your Canon..." - but it never is.

not really a big deal friend, however... the thread-starter is obviously happy about getting a new camera (quite understandably- it's a fantastic camera for the money) so why try to bring him/her down with tactless, subjective statements? canon/nikkon=great camera... no problem. we do, however, agree that he should get a tripod if he has the inclination to get creative, right?
{Edit: i had to add that i noticed his signature reads: Ducati Forever! fanboy giveaway?}

LOL, the Canon / Nikon thing really has flared up here recently. :D

I have an S50, which I have really enjoyed. Don't bother installing the Canon canon software unless/until you come up with a specific reason for needing it.... I use iPhoto and PS Elements 3 exclusively with my Rebel and with my S50. If you shoot in RAW, though (not sure if the 320 can?) then that might be a good reason to go to Canon's s/w.

Enjoy your camera, take lots of pics, and post some that you enjoyed here! :)

Oh, also check the Canon website for firmware updates...there was a 2.0 firmware for my S50 and it seemed to have some nice improvements.

I have Canon PowerShot Pro1 (see signature) Great camera!

Oh and I use iPhoto & Photoshop too (now CS2 :D)

sourcemonkey great entry-level camera. i have one myself. a tripod takes photography to another level. if you dont have one i recommend buying a good one and getting out there.
Just got a tripod this weekend and I'm having fun using it for some great pictures that I might not have taken before (to much coffee ;) ) I would second the thought of buying one :)

I have a Powershot S50(5.0 MP), one of the older models, its a really good camera, I also have a Canon IXUS 40, which is nice and small but i still prefer the S50's quality..
Peace.
