Cannot access shared APFS encrypted volume

I have an external SSD with an APFS encrypted volume. I set Sharing on, and can see the volume on my iPad after logging on, but I get an Access Denied error when I try to access the contents. This does not occur when I access the internal drive, or an unencrypted volume that is also on the external SSD. Has anyone seen something similar?

Contacted Apple Support. This is a known issue, with a simple but not obvious solution:

Turn Off Sharing in Sharing Preferences

Reboot Mac

Turn On Sharing in Sharing Preferences
