Cannot Connect to Gmail IMAP

My wife and I both cannot connect via the "Mail" application on our 3Gs today. Is anybody else getting the following error message while trying to access gmail? I can access it fine through Safari or any other web browser.

"Cannot Get Mail
The connection to the server "imap.gmail.com" failed."

Did you turn on IMAP in the gmail settings?

They may be updating the system, or you don't have SSL enabled.

I can only imagine it's something to do with their servers. We've been getting mail just fine since launch day. IMAP is enabled.

It came back online by 6pm for us. Must have been a Google thing.

hey i had the same problem on my iphone
trying to set up gmail imap
it would first ask if it was ok to not use SSL
then it would say imap.gmail.com is not responding.

all i had to do to get it working was to clear the CAPTCHA.
