cannot create new folder in external HDD. Asks for finder authentication

I have an external HDD where I backup my stuff. When I tried to create a new folder today, there was no such option in the menu.. And when I tried to copy something, it always poped - up the authenticate finder window where it asked for the admin password. I didn't have this problem at the past. Does anyone know how to restore full access to the HDD? I have read and write permissions to all folders and to the HDD itself..
