iPad Cannot delete apps from iTunes

I have some apps that I removed from my iPad and no longer want them, but I am unable to delete them from iTunes on my Mac. I've tried using the Delete key, right-click and Control-click but nothing works. How can I permanently remove these unwanted apps?
