And I'm no longer a fan of the slow process that is required with iPhoto. Any tips? I can't find any drivers online for it either, only software updates. BUt I jsut want it pop up in finder as a camera, as other cameras do.

Set your camera to use "mass storage" protocol. It is likely set now to "pict bridge". If the camera can't be set then you will have to use a card reader. carders always use mass storage protocol. If you can't do that anf must use the camera in pict bridge mode and don't like iPhoto you can use Image Capture in place of iPhoto.
Some people use the canon's software. It's actually pretty good. I've converted to Aperture. It's very quick and also very flexible in how it lets me organize my image files.
