Correct, with the box unchecked, your online status is hidden from others.

I think it still shows for yourself, so that may be confusing.

I can see your online status, but I think that's only because I'm a moderator. If I don't login to my account, then it doesn't show. Here's an old thread from 2014 about this issue in the Xenforo forums. Apparently, a forum software update changed the way that the indicator appears to the individual user and created some confusion at that time.

Online indicator - still shows online status

I currently have the "Show your online status" unchecked in my Preferences: Yet when I view a thread that I have posted in, it still shows the online status indicator. I realize this is currently by design, but I don't think this is a good idea. By continuing to show the online status...
