cannot install .pkg files

Dear all,

As the title suggests I cannot install .pkg files. When I click on them it opens a terminal window. I know the pkg file is ok at it runs on a friends mac and takes them through to an installation screen (she has 10.6.8 I have 10.7.1). Is there an easy way to fix this? By default .pkg files open with terminal, but I have no idea where installer is kept, it isn't in /applications/utilities, neither is it there on my friends 10.6.8 mac.

What is it?
Where did you get it? Is it possible that that file is corrupted?

Perhaps you can re-download it

get info (command I)

set Open with to

/System/Library/CoreServices/Installer.app
