New Mac owner...

I attempt to drag a dock icon to a new location on the dock, but it won't let me. The other icons don't separate so the icon will drop to the location I want. Randomly, items will separate when I hover over so I could drop the item between them, but only in that spot and no other locations. What am I missing here?

So, I'm unable to put the dock icons exactly where I want them. I've installed all updates.

Are you by any chance trying to move items from the right hand side of the dock (to the right of the dividing line that is) to the left (or the other way around)?

If so that will not work, as the left side of the dock is reserved for application icons and the right side is reserved for folders/stacks.

For future reference too, dragging new items to the dock on the wrong side will not open a space for them either.

What icon are you trying to move?

If it is a folder/HD/server mount, you can only place those on the left side of the trash can (and right side of the line).

I'm just trying to move yahoo IM, word, ichat, everything! Yes I am only trying to move them on the left side of the dock with the other apps. I hover the icon over to placed icons, but they don't separate.

Hello,

If you see a line separator somewhere in the far right of the dock, that right area is for files and folders dock icon (shortcuts for files and folders). On the left side of the separator, that's the application dock icon (shortcuts for applications). You won't be able to put an application dock icon to the files and folders dock area. The same goes when you try to put a files or folders dock icon to the application dock area.

I think that's the problem you're having. Try it. Create a folder on Desktop and try putting it on the right side and the left side of the dock. Same goes for applications.

I hope that makes sense. :)

Hmmmm....... could you try pointing the icon lower to the dock and see if that works.
