Cannot open Installer

I'm trying to upgrade my 10.6.8 Snow Leopard to El Capitain or Yosemite on my Mid 2009 white MacBook.

I have downloaded the OS from the Apple site but when i click on the "installMacOSX.pkg" nothing happens the installer icon in the dock just keeps bouncing this is for EL Capitan and Yosemite.

This is a fresh install of Snow Leopard on an external HD as a practice

Have you looked in the Applications folder to see if the "Install OS X El Capitan" app is in there?
