Cannot open Pdf or image on Macbook Pro

hello all,

sorry i searched it online and here but couldn't find anything. All of the sudden i can no longer open photos (jpeg, jpg) and pdf files on my mac. I have ver 10.9.4

"It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize."

i tried opening it directly from safari or chrome but no luck. I have so many pictures and pdf.

anybody has an idea what i can do?

Did you try a simple restart of your Mac?

Have you tried another user on your Mac? It would be a good time to create a new user just for this purpose. If you still can't open an image file (with ANY software), then you could try downloading and installing the current combined updater for 10.9.5 (which would also get you fully up-to-date, too!) from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1760.

If installing the combined updater also doesn't help, then reinstall. Easy - just restart holding Command-R, then choose Reinstall OS X, and follow the simple steps. You WON'T lose any of your files, pictures, music, etc. That install simply reinstalls your system, and can reset various parts of your system that might be causing your problem. Run Software Update to make sure that all of the system and security updates have been installed, and you should be good to go!
