Long story short: Tried to install Windows 8 in Bootcamp, it wouldn't boot because of some infamous Windows error, I removed it again using Bootcamp Assistant.
BUT
Bootcamp Assistant didn't feel like repartitioning the empty space left behind, so now I'm left with a large partition that I can't format into anything, either from within system or through external EFI boot. Console says something like "Preparing to partition"... but nothing happens, and there are no other errors.
Help, I miss my disk space.
EDIT: solved. GParted was able to pull through with formatting and moving partitions around. Boot into recovery and repair the drive afterwards, and then everything should be fine again.
