Hi all
trying to do a fresh install on an older iMac. I am connected to wifi and I am logging in with a valid appleID (I can log into my appleID without any issue on my other macbook)
See photo attached - I keep getting this error: "apple account creation is not current available on the mac app store". I am trying to install MacOS fresh. Any ideas please? thank you

Do not login to the servers during install. Skip it and login later. On very old macOS's you should have received an email or a phone code on your devices which you need to use after typing the password in the login window. They did not have 2FA authentication back in the days which is a requirement now.

I tried to skip but keeps bringing me back to appleID login. I turned off wifi when I get to that step and doesn't work. Any other ideas?

With Maverics you should be able to login as I described:
On older devices, if you type in the Two-Factor Authenticaction Password/Code AFTER the Apple ID passcode, that is how you use Two Factor Authentication on older devices.

e.g. Let‘s say your Apple ID Password is “Apple” and let’s say your Two-Factor Authentication Code is “199456”, then when you type in your password onto your older Mac, and it asks for two-factor authentication, you will type “Apple199456” as your password.
For the login screen it will not ask for the 2FA code but you should receive the code anyway once you try to login with the password only.

I have to say also that for Maverics you can't install it from the recovery partition only unless you have "purchased" it in the past and you can find it in your apps in the App Store. With the full installer burned on a USB there is no such login prompt.

You can use this DMG to restore it to your drive no need for installation:
Code:
sudo asr restore --source /<path_to_file>/osx-10.9.5-13F34.hfs/osx-10.9.5-13F34.hfs.dmg --target /Volumes/<destination> --erase --verbose --noprompt --noverify --buffers 1 --buffersize 32m --puppetstrings

Thanks is it possible to do this on M1 series?
M1? That is different architecture, you cannot run Maverick on M1 chips. The lowest version of macOS you can run on any Mac is the one which came with the device. Prior versions do not have correct drivers - and in this case M1 is different chip architecture altogether.

If it is not younger than 2015. I thought you were asking about the restoration only not about the booting. If the MacBook supports booting Mavericks create another partition on that drive HFS+ and restore it there.

Intel 2012 and newer, boot with Command-Option-R and it will install the newest version that Mac is capable of running.

I’m trying to create a bootable Mavericks usb drive with an intel MacBook Pro or a M1 MacBook Air. I have the mavericks DMG file. How do I do this?

You don't need the USB. You can install this recovery DMG directly on the drive which will boot Mavericks. The result will be when you boot from that drive it will take you directly to the customization screen. And this DMG has all the updates. This is a never booted DMG created from the original Mavericks.app after applying all the updates externally. Which machine will boot Mavericks and is it bootable at the moment?

Thanks but how do I get the Mavericks.dmg onto the old iMac? Right now there is no OS installed. I’m just booting directly into Recovery Mode.

Do you have another Mac which can run macOS Catalina or earlier? You can restore using target disk mode.
What is the operating system this iMac shipped with? What is the model number?

You haven't told us WHAT YEAR the iMac is.

As mentioned above...
An important step is whether or not you can boot to INTERNET recovery.
Can you?

Try this (it will hurt nothing and you can try it now):

Power down -- all the way off.

Press AND HOLD these keys:
Command-option-R

While STILL HOLDING DOWN those keys, press AND RELEASE the power on button.
DON'T LET GO OF THOSE KEYS!

The best method of connection for doing this is ethernet.
BUT
If you are connecting via wifi, LET GO of the keys when you're asked for your wifi password.
Otherwise, you can let go when you see "the spinning globe".

It takes a little while for the internet utilities to load.
Can you get to the point where they are loaded, and the utilities screen appears?

IF YOU CAN GET THIS FAR, we can go further, but you have to try this first.

iMac 20" / A1224. I think it shipped with Mavericks. I do not have another Mac with Catalina or earlier. Only have an M1 or a macbook pro with Monterey.

I will give this a go and try - I couldn't get past the appleID login, hope this internet recovery I do not have to authenticate this way. Will try and revert back

OK I restarted from cold and tried the above. The issue is I have a windows keyboard (not a mac keyboard). Not sure how I can press 'command-option'. I tried with "CTRL+Windows key+R" and "CTRL+ALT+R" both result in booting up into this screen you see in the attachment (you can also see the keyboard i'm using). Actually, even if I do not press anything, I get into this OSX Utilities recovery mode screen. I am connected via wired ethernet. I can ping yahoo.com in the network utility. Please let me know what I can do next. Thank you!

"he issue is I have a windows keyboard (not a mac keyboard). Not sure how I can press 'command-option'."

Try the Windows Key + ALT + R

Does that work?

I've never used a Windows keyboard on a Mac, but I'll assume that the Windows key functions like the "command key" on a Mac keyboard, and the ALT key takes the place of the "option key" on a Mac keyboard.

I welcome correction from anyone reading this reply.

Just tried that - I boot into the exact same screen in the previously attached photo. Whether I hold any key combo or just let the machine start from normal. what should I be looking for pls?
