Anyone with suggestions please feel free to comment.
I'm running Mac OS 10.5.5 and have Time Machine enabled for Back ups. I have been backing up both my Internal Drive & a Firewire Drive to another Firewire Drive for about 6 months. About two weeks ago, my back ups began to fail. I kept getting Error Code -50. I did some investigating on the Apple Support site and it instructed me to repair disks using Disk Utility. I did so but with no success. Another suggestion that I was hesitant to try was to re-format the back up drive. I was hesitant but did so out of desparation, figuring I could at least copy all my files to the drive once it was reformatted even if Time Machine wasn't working. I reformatted the drive Mac OS Extended Journaled.
Again, Time Machine did not run properly. It looked as though the backup would begin, but after about 70 MBs it stopped. This time with no error code, just a message "Unable to complete backup. An error occcurred while copying files to the backup volume."
I then made an attempt to move files from both my internal hard drive and from the Firewire Drive to the Back up drive, with no success. Either the copying files will hang and nothing will copy, or I get an error message that says something like "File "____" cannot be read or written". I can move some files around if they are smaller than about 5 MBs, but that's it.
I did more investigating and decided to repair permissions using Disk Utility. I got the following:
Repairing permissions for OSX
Reading permissions database.
Reading the permissions database can take several minutes.
Permissions differ on "private/var/log/secure.log", should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r----- .
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.
Permissions differ on "private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are drwxrwxr-x .

I then tried backing up and moving files around again, but to no avail. I tried burning some of my files from my drives onto DVDs, but I'm getting errors after about five minutes of burning. Am I hopeless?
